How better meta descriptions help your brand

A clear, complete meta description that fits the display width improves click-through rate on the results where Google decides to show it. It doesn't affect ranking directly, but CTR is one of the signals your search performance actually gets measured on.

Google truncates by pixel width, not exact character count, so treat 155 characters as a practical target rather than a hard rule. Wide letters like W and M eat more space than narrow ones, which is why two descriptions with the same character count can render differently.

Google also writes its own snippet from page content in a meaningful share of cases, especially when a description looks stuffed with keywords or doesn't match the page. Write for the reader first, and treat the character count as a constraint, not the goal.

Meta description FAQs

What's the ideal meta description length in 2026?

Aim for roughly 150 to 155 characters on desktop, which is where Google's ~920-pixel display width typically cuts off for standard text. On mobile, the safe zone is closer to 120 characters, so front-load your keyword and value proposition into the first 120 characters whenever you can.

Does meta description length affect Google rankings?

Not directly. Meta descriptions are not a ranking factor. They influence click-through rate on the results where Google chooses to display them, and CTR is one of the signals that affects how a page performs over time, but the description itself does not move rankings on its own.

Why does Google sometimes rewrite my meta description?

Google generates its own snippet from page content when it judges the written description to be a weaker match for the query, keyword-stuffed, duplicated across pages, or missing entirely. Writing a specific, natural description that matches what's actually on the page reduces how often this happens.

What's the difference between desktop and mobile length limits?

Desktop typically displays up to roughly 920 pixels, close to 155-160 characters for average text. Mobile results truncate sooner, closer to 120 characters, because the results container is narrower. A description written for desktop length alone often gets cut off mid-sentence on mobile.

How do I add this to my page?

Paste your chosen draft into your page's meta description field, either directly in the HTML as <meta name="description" content="..."> inside the <head>, or through your CMS's SEO fields if you're using WordPress, Webflow, or a similar platform.
